Client Testimonials

I visited Nepal in September 2006 for the purpose of trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary area. I was introduced to Clan Treks and Bishwa Chapagain by a mutual friend from the United Kingdom.

The level of service I received from Clan Treks was second to none, in fact a close friendship has developed as a result of the 10 days we spend trekking in the Sanctuary...

Lower Dolpo Trekking

Dolpo is located to the west of the Kali Gandaki Valley, including the Shey - Phoksundo National Park of Midwestern Nepal, in the rear of the Mt. Dhaulagiri, towards the Tibetan Plateau. Cut off by a series of very high passes, covered with snow most of the year; Dolpo remains a truly secluded section of Nepal. The finally preserved Ecosystem encompasses a wild and wonderful variety of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and leopard. A trek through Dolpo is a lifetime and larger than life experience. Dolpo is a hidden valley created by a Buddhist deity for his worshippers. Today, it is celebrated as a sample of original Tibet. Blue sheep, Himalayan black bear and the snow leopard are the most talked about fauna of this region. Dolpo is located inside the Shey-Phoksundo National Park of mid-western Nepal, behind the North side of the Dhaulagiri massif towards the Tibetan plateau.

Dolpo trek offers opportunities to visit beautiful lakes, relatively high passes, ancient villages, secluded Buddhist monasteries and also to experience the vast collection of wildlife inhabiting the region, including Blue sheep, Mountain Goat, Jackal, Wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard. The people of this region are a mixture of ethnic groups such as the Magar, Gurung and some Aryans and are quite different in culture and language to their cousins further east. Of particular interest are the Thakuri, the royal family caste. Lower Dolpo is thickly forested with conifers and cut by gushing rivers. Among the possibilities of many interesting animals and great many varieties of birds to be encountered through to the forest of Dolpo the prime attraction is the endangered musk deer, which may be glimpsed along the trails and to a great variety of birds. The upper portion of Dolpo, however, is an extension of the Tibetan Plateau and has the same wild, windswept, open spaces characteristic of Tibet.

Day 02.

KATHMANDU CITY TOUR: Which is the oldest of the three major cities in Kathmandu Valley - famous for its Buddhist monuments and Hindu temples, and you can catch the traditional artisans working with wood, stones and metals.

Pashupatinath: It is one of the most known holy places for Hindu pilgrims in Kathmandu valley. The whole vicinity of Pashupatinath is densed with ages old pagoda model temples with golden plated roofs and the gorgeous woodcarvings on the doors and windows. To the south of the temple, the holy Bagmati river flows down sweeping the burnt dust of dead bodies produced from the cremation on its side. A small green holy wood forest breeze maintains the site cool all the time.

Kathmandu Durbar Square: Around the square there are some temples stood upright piercing the sky canopy and through the thousands of pigeon they spread the message of peace. Kumari temple is one of the most important parts of the square site where the ‘Living Goddess’ resides. Apart from those temples, a museum will be waiting for its visitors with an opportunity to unravel the treasures unabashedly. To visit this site is to know the historical facts of Nepal.

Soyambhunath: It is also known as ‘Monkey Temple’. The wide area of Soyambhunath is a hillock surrounded by small forest with some golden temples of Lord Buddha at the western gate and a main temple at the top of the hill. The most interesting thing with Soyambhunath is the nice view of Kathmandu valley to be seen from the top of the hill. Various kinds and sizes of monkeys are seen guarding the hillock. A lot of monasteries with big prayer wheels are the main attraction for the visitors.

Boudhanath: It is one of the nice places to visit in Kathmandu valley, which has the biggest stupa. When someone enters the gate the holy prayer to sense peace is heard all around. All the Buddhists want to visit Boudhanath to feel the real sense of Buddhism. Boudhanath Stupa - one of biggest stupas in the valley, has been built on 17th Century.

Day 03. KATHMANDU – NEPALGUNJ: In the afternoon you will be headed towards Nepalgunj by flight. Nepalgunj is a commercial centre of the western Terai having very hot climate.
Day 04. NEPALGUNJ – JUMLA – GOTHICHAUR: Early in the morning you will be transferred to the Nepalgunj Airport for the flight to Jumla. From Jumla the trek leads to a southwesterly direction then passes through terraced fields of wheat, potato, barley and some small villages. It is a pleasant day's walk to the village of Gothichour having opportunity to encounter with Dolpo-pa traders with their caravans of pack animals, laden with salt from Tibet, headed for the middle hills.
Day 05. GOTHICHAUR – CHURTA: From here, the trail continues southwest to Manisangu, where you will need to show your trekking permit. After this has been examined you will continue to Sherpa Gaon where you will have the opportunity to witness Sherpa culture. From Sherpa Gaon the trail follows a series of ups and downs to the village of Churta.
Day 06. CHURTA – CHAURIKOT: After a long day of constant climbing through hamlets, and the occasional forests, cross the first of the high passes on this trip - the Mauri La (4326m). From the pass you descend to the village of Chaurikot and on to the camp. It is very likely that as you pass through villages in this region people will flock out of their houses to see you. Do not be alarmed. Some of these people have never seen westerners before and are curious to find out more about them. You should ask for permission before taking photographs. People who have not seen cameras, ever, do not like strange objects, which make funny sounds pointed at them!
Day 07. CHAURIKOT – BHERI RIVER SIDE: From Chaurikot you follow a series of ups and downs to the village of Rimi, high above the north bank of the Bheri River. Get ahead of some villages inhabited by blacksmiths and tailors. The trail drops to a stream before climbing through a forest of walnut trees to a ridge.
Day 08. BHERI RIVER SIDE – KANGMARA (3500m): Today you will head northwest along the Garpung Khola, which is a major tributary of the Bheri to Hurikot. Continuing from Hurikot you will cross the Garpung Khola to its southern bank and reach Kagmara.
Day 09. REST DAY: This is a day for you to spend for proper acclimatization and to get some genuine rest after the strenuous trekking of the last couple of days. You will need to go to bed early today to be able to wake up and make a very early start tomorrow.
Day 10. KAGMARA – CHAURI KHARKA: Waking up early you start out, upwards, for the Kagmara-La prior to the day gets hot and the sun melts the snow (when there is some), making ascent difficult. This is going to be a long day. On the ascent to the pass the forest at first is quite dense and sighting are possible of the Red Panda and various kinds of birds. On the rare occasion you may be lucky to see markings of the blue sheep, black bear, snow leopard or the Himalayan wolf. On still rare occasions you may see the animals themselves. After crossing the Kagmara_La, the trail descends to Chouri Kharka from where magnificent views of the Kajiroba Himal are available. After descending for some time you arrive at a birch forest where water is available. Your camp will be set up at a grassy spot near the forest.
Day 11. CHAURI KHARKA – RINGMO: From Chauri Kharka you will descend further to Dorjan Khola. Carry on through the village of Pungmo to Suli Khola and then turning north you continue to the village of Ringmo. Ringmo is one of the enclaves where Bon Po is still practiced and is situated very close to Phoksundo Lake.
Day 12. REST DAY: The icy waters give off a blue to turquoise color and a sunny day by the lake gives you some much needed rest. If the weather is good, you can view the peaks of the Kanjiroba Himal and the other peaks surrounding Kagmara-La. It is also possible to visit the Ringmo Monastery at the edge of the lake.
Day 13. RINGMO – SUMDOWA: Set off from Ringmo, heading south back over the previous trail as far as the point where the trail meets the one from Kagmara-La and then proceed further south to the village of Sumdowa. The headquarters of the National Park is located at Sumdowa.
Day 14. SUMDOWA – HANKE: Trek further south along the Suligad River to the village of Hanke on the east bank of the Suligad River. This is a typical village, which depicts Dolpeli Culture and lifestyle.
Day 15. HANKE – JUPHAL: Today’s trek is a rewarding trek in the sense that you will witness the highest waterfall of Nepal. Continue trekking south through the village of Roha Gaon to the settlement at Suligad along the river and then continue to the large settlement of Dunai. Cross the river and head west towards the airfield at Juphal from where you will catch your flight to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
Day 16. JUPHAL – NEPALGUNJ: This morning you proceed to check in the airport and then you will be transferred to Juphal Airport for your flight to Nepalgunj. The remainder of the day has been left free.
Day 17. NEPALGUNJ – KATHMANDU: In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the Nepalgunj Airport to catch the flight to Kathmandu. The remainder of the day has been left free.

Climate:

Nepal has a generally temperate climate, however altitude makes distinct variations.

The monsoon sweeps up from India each summer, making mid June to mid September humid and wet. The three other distinct seasons are all suitable for trekking and each has its own advantages. Changing global weather patterns have had their effect on the Himalayan climate making mountain weather notoriously changeable. Always be prepared for a change in conditions and note that if severe or dangerous weather conditions occur your guide’s decision on any course of action is final.

Autumn (September – November): This season offers excellent weather and tantalizing mountain views.

Winter (December – February): This season is noted for occasional snowfall only at higher elevation. Hence it is ideal for trekking at lower elevations, generally below 3000 meters.

Spring (March – May): Different varieties of wild flowers, specially the rhododendrons make the hillside above 5000 meters a haunting paradise during this season. It is mildly warm at lower elevations and at higher elevation over 4000 meters the mountain views are excellent and temperature is quite moderate.

Summer (June – August): Summer months, continues up to mid September making travel wet and warm. These times are blessed for the keen botanist as the higher valleys and meadows blossom with flowers and lush vegetation. It is recommended to carry insect repellent when trekking during summer months.

Health:

There are no specific health requirements for entry into Nepal. Nevertheless, preventive measures such as a thorough medical check up can save you from unexpected hazards. Nepal does not require any particular inoculation but Cholera, Meningitis, Tetanus and Diphtheria, Typhoid and Gamma Globulin are some of the vaccinations that should be considered for your trip. Since the remote places of Nepal are not supplied with necessities that are essential for modern medical facilities, it is imperative to make a comprehensive First Aid Box consisting of basic drugs and accessories as part of the paraphernalia for your trip. Modern dentistry is unknown in the hills of Nepal, so it is advised to have a checkup before departure from home. Tooth fillings sometimes loosen in cold temperature and at high altitudes, so it is recommended having them checked

Altitude Sickness:

Altitude sickness often known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is particularly an important medical consideration while trekking in Nepal. Altitude sickness means the effect of altitude on those who ascend too rapidly to elevation above 3000 meters. The initial symptoms of AMS are as follows:

  • Nausea, Vomiting
  • Lose of appetite
  • Insomnia/Sleeplessness
  • Persistent Headache
  • Dizziness, Light headiness, Confusion
  • isorientation
  • Weakness, Fatigue, Lassitude, Heavy legs
  • Slight swelling of hand and face
  • Breathlessness and breathing irregularity
  • Reduced urine output

These symptoms are to be taken very seriously. In case of appearance of any of the above symptoms, immediately contact your travel guide.

In order for the Company to confirm and guarantee the Client’s travel arrangements the Client must provide all Client details with their final payment as per the dates specified.
