Client Testimonials

I visited Nepal in September 2006 for the purpose of trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary area. I was introduced to Clan Treks and Bishwa Chapagain by a mutual friend from the United Kingdom.

The level of service I received from Clan Treks was second to none, in fact a close friendship has developed as a result of the 10 days we spend trekking in the Sanctuary...

Upper Mustang Trekking, Rafting & Chitwan Jungle Safari

Elephent SafariThe region of the Tibetan influence, Kaligandaki, from the Tibetan border south to Kagbeni is generally referred to as “Upper Mustang". Mustang is one of the few places in the world that has long-lived a very close-niche life is now accessible to outsiders. Until the 1990s, the isolated region of the Kali Gandaki valley known as Upper Mustang was closed to trekkers due to its sensitive location next to the Tibetan border. This isolation helped the people of Mustang to maintain their lifestyle and heritage that remained almost unchanged for centuries. Hidden behind the majestic Himalayan ranges of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, Mustang is filled with beautiful trekking zones.

Comparatively, treks into Mustang are among the most expensive in Nepal. However, for many people the cost is more than justified by the chance to explore this high desert region that has far more in common with Tibet than it does with Nepal. The brown landscape, jagged peaks, and mud-walled villages are reminders of what Tibet must have been like before the Chinese invasion. At present Mustang is a very popular trekking region in Nepal. The trek to Lo Manthang of Upper Mustang is through an almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks make your trek memorable.

The Kaligandaki rafting begins high on the Tibetan plateau in the kingdom of Mustang. Plunging its way down through the Himalayas, the river carves the deepest gorge in the world between the two 8000m peaks Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. The beautiful scenery on this remote river makes Kaligandaki rafting trip a favorite among those looking for a short to medium length trip. The river passes through narrow gorges, alongside tumbling waterfalls, jungle with a variety of wildlife, amazing beaches, temples, and the villages of the traditional Magar and Chhetri, whose inhabitants often venture down to the riverside to meet the rafters. Turbulent rapids intertwine with abrupt drops as we dodge our way down intricate chutes of sparkling water. Village terraces cling precariously to the slopes and strange snow capped peaks lounge suspended above us as we drift through the world's deepest gorge.

Feel the excitement of the wild in the most famous park in the entire South East Asia – a wonderful world of lush sub-tropical jungles, tall elephant grass, lakes and rivers – a home for some of the most endangered animals on earth, the elusive Bengal tiger and the prehistoric rhinoceros, including many species of mammals, birds, insects and reptiles. Make your tour on elephant back, by jeep and on boat. Savor the forest and its unique sanctuary through a quite natural walk with a local guide. All the jungle activities are just a step away and there's always a chance to spot wildlife.

Day to Day Detail Itinerary

Day 01. ARRIVE IN KATHMANDU: Pick up from the airport, transfer to hotel. While in Kathmandu fascinating Buddhist and Hindu temples and shrines reflecting ancient local traditions are highlighted on our guided tour. There's time to explore the city's scores of charms on your own too. In the evening delicious traditional Nepali welcome dinner will be awaiting you.
Day 02.

KATHMANDU CITY TOUR: Which is the oldest of the three major cities in Kathmandu Valley - famous for its Buddhist monuments and Hindu temples, and you can catch the traditional artisans working with wood, stones and metals.

Pashupatinath: It is one of the most known holy places for Hindu pilgrims in Kathmandu valley. The whole vicinity of Pashupatinath is densed with ages old pagoda model temples with golden plated roofs and the gorgeous woodcarvings on the doors and windows. To the south of the temple, the holy Bagmati river flows down sweeping the burnt dust of dead bodies produced from the cremation on its side. A small green holy wood forest breeze maintains the site cool all the time.

Kathmandu Durbar Square: Around the square there are some temples stood upright piercing the sky canopy and through the thousands of pigeon they spread the message of peace. Kumari temple is one of the most important parts of the square site where the ‘Living Goddess’ resides. Apart from those temples, a museum will be waiting for its visitors with an opportunity to unravel the treasures unabashedly. To visit this site is to know the historical facts of Nepal.

Soyambhunath: It is also known as ‘Monkey Temple’. The wide area of Soyambhunath is a hillock surrounded by small forest with some golden temples of Lord Buddha at the western gate and a main temple at the top of the hill. The most interesting thing with Soyambhunath is the nice view of Kathmandu valley to be seen from the top of the hill. Various kinds and sizes of monkeys are seen guarding the hillock. A lot of monasteries with big prayer wheels are the main attraction for the visitors.

Boudhanath: It is one of the nice places to visit in Kathmandu valley, which has the biggest stupa. When someone enters the gate the holy prayer to sense peace is heard all around. All the Buddhists want to visit Boudhanath to feel the real sense of Buddhism. Boudhanath Stupa - one of biggest stupas in the valley, has been built on 17th Century.

Day 03. KATHMANDU – POKHARA: Early in the morning you will be driven to Pokhara (200km) which is approximately a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu. Pokhara lakeside villages are situated in the "front row center" to one of the most beautiful Himalayan panoramas in the world. The Annapurna and famous "Fishtail" mountain peak of Machapuchhre tower over the tropical setting of Pokhara and you spend there will be the scenic highlight of your trip. You can enjoy the city by the Fewa Lake witnessing the region of Annapurna range of Himalayas.
Day 04. POKHARA – JOMSOM – KAGBENI (2870M): (including domestic flight): You will take an early morning flight to the head quarter of mustang district, Jomson. You will feel a drastic change in the vegetation as soon as you come out of the aircraft, from the lush green vegetation in Pokhara to the desert-like vegetation of Jomson. All this is the indication that you’ve entered the ‘rain shadow’ area. We start trekking from Jomsom to Kagbeni for about 4 hours.
Day 05. KAGBENI – CHELE: There is a trail up the east bank of the Kaligandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads north and reaches Tangbe village. The town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys amongst whitewashed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, and wheat and apple orchards. Nilgiri peak, which dominates the southern skyline at Kagbeni, continues to loom massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond Tangbe we reach Chuksang village about 1 1/2 hrs trek, and cross the river from there you continue north climbing up the trail to a huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. The trek now leaves the Kali Gandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to Tshe-Le (3030m), a village of extensive wheat and barley fields where we set up camp for the night. Tshe-Le was the first Mustangi village to build a hotel, the Durable, has a few small shops. The culture changes at this point from Manangi to the Tibetan culture of Lo. Sheep horns adorn the houses in Tibetan style, and there are protective amulets in the shape of a cross on the walls of the houses, similar to what we find in the old Tibetan villages in Ladakh and Zanskar. The trek now leaves the Kali Gandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to Chele (3030m). At this juncture the culture changes from the Manangi culture to the Tibetan culture of Lo.
Day 06. CHELE – GELING: The climb continues along steep, treeless, waterless terrain, along the side of the spectacular steep canyon to a pass and cairn of rock (3540m). Then the trail makes a long gradual descent to some chortens on a ridge, and then descends further on a pleasant trail to Samar. The Annapurna, still dominated by Nilgiri, is visible far to the south. Climb above Samar to a ridge, then descend into a large gorge and the trail goes into another valley field, crosses a stream and climbs up to a ridge (3800m). The route climbs over yet another pass, follows a ridge and then descends to Shyanmochen. From there gently climb to a pass (3770m) and descend to Geling.
Day 07. GELING – CHARANG: From Geling, the trail climbs gently to the interesting pass on your trek NYI LA and descend below the blue, grey and red cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge across the Tangmar Chu (river), then climb past perhaps the longest and most spectacular stretch and main wall in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3600m, the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang. The huge five story white Dzong and red Gompa is an interesting visit to observe collections of statues and Thankas as well as many large paintings of seated Buddha’s.
Day 08. CHARANG - LO MANGTHANG: The trail descends about 100 meters down from Charang, crosses the Charang Chu and climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. In the 1380’s, King Ame Pal established his reign in Lo, with the walled city of Lo Monthang as the capital and its inhabitants are called Lobas. Within the walls of Lo Manthang are about 150 houses built among narrow streets, and some of the largest and finest Tibetan Buddhist gompas in Nepal. Finally from a ridge at 3850m there is a view of the walled city of LO. After a short descent, cross a stream then climb up into the plateau of LO Manthang.
Day 09-10. LO MANGTHANG: There are four major places and several other places like the Tall Champa Lakhang "God house", the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Entrance Hall which are the main attractions of this town. And another attraction is the four-story building of the Raja's Palace as well as the surrounding panoramic views of the Himalaya. Having seen one, you are excited to see the others. There are four major temples within the medieval walls of Lo, Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa, Chodey Gompa and Choprang Gompa. There is also the Raja's Palace, home to the present King and Queen (who is from an aristocratic Lhasa family) and an interesting maze of a village to explore, and plenty of time to marvel at the surrounding panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya. Besides LO Manthang there are two other interesting valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tingkhar, the sight of Raja's summer palace, Kimling and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Nangyals "The Monastery of Victory” is the newest and most active Gompa in LO. The eastern valley contains Chosar, the site of a High School, Garphu and Nyphu Gompa and is the main trading route to Lhasa.
Day 11. LO MANGTHANG - GHAMI VIA GEKAR: This is an opportunity to visit two other villages on your return trek. The trail climbs steadily to the pass marked by a cairn, offering a last glimpse of LO Manthang. The trail contours past two small ridges and valleys and acrosses a ridge at 4070m then descends across to the south through two more valleys, meadows and a stream. The trail then makes a long rocky descent to Gekar. LO Gekar Gompa is older than Samye Gompa in Tibet and one of the oldest Gompas in Nepal. Then crosses a ridge after a little climbing and drops down steeply to Thamar village. The trail descends along the side of the stone walls and fields of extensive villages, and then climbs to a ridge. It is a short descent to Ghami.
Day 12. GHAMI – SAMAR: From Ghami climb to NYI LA and descend to Samar through the same route. On the way you encounter beautiful scenery of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri Mountain in southern facet of Kaligandaki valley.
Day 13. SAMAR – KAGBENI: Return trek to Kagbeni is an easy way. Passing through a labyrinth of narrow alleys amongst whitewashed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, and wheat and apple orchards as well as Nilgiri peak, which dominates the southern skyline at Kagbeni is a marvelous experience. If time allows you can pay visit to Kagbeni monastery (Red House) which was built in the 15th century thus holds a historical significance. The books brought in from Tibet in-scripted with gold are a rare treasure available here to witness.
Day 14. KAGBENI – JOMSOM: After breakfast the trek descends gradually through the fields and popular groves, and then goes down flat into Kali Gandaki riverside passing the valley floor of Eklebhatti (2,774m). The route follows the valley southwards to Jomson, the administration headquarter of Mustang. From here the trek continues down to Jomsom with a commercial town. Today’s trek is easy but comparatively short with approximately of 4 hours.
Day 15. JOMSOM – POKHARA: Today the flight to the Pokhara early in the morning, descends through green forests hills, all the way to the valley floor, with biggest gorge, spectacular mountain views, from where we make our way to the city of Pokhara.

Climate:

Nepal has a generally temperate climate, however altitude makes distinct variations.

The monsoon sweeps up from India each summer, making mid June to mid September humid and wet. The three other distinct seasons are all suitable for trekking and each has its own advantages. Changing global weather patterns have had their effect on the Himalayan climate making mountain weather notoriously changeable. Always be prepared for a change in conditions and note that if severe or dangerous weather conditions occur your guide’s decision on any course of action is final.

Autumn (September – November): This season offers excellent weather and tantalizing mountain views.

Winter (December – February): This season is noted for occasional snowfall only at higher elevation. Hence it is ideal for trekking at lower elevations, generally below 3000 meters.

Spring (March – May): Different varieties of wild flowers, specially the rhododendrons make the hillside above 5000 meters a haunting paradise during this season. It is mildly warm at lower elevations and at higher elevation over 4000 meters the mountain views are excellent and temperature is quite moderate.

Summer (June – August): Summer months, continues up to mid September making travel wet and warm. These times are blessed for the keen botanist as the higher valleys and meadows blossom with flowers and lush vegetation. It is recommended to carry insect repellent when trekking during summer months.

Health:

There are no specific health requirements for entry into Nepal. Nevertheless, preventive measures such as a thorough medical check up can save you from unexpected hazards. Nepal does not require any particular inoculation but Cholera, Meningitis, Tetanus and Diphtheria, Typhoid and Gamma Globulin are some of the vaccinations that should be considered for your trip. Since the remote places of Nepal are not supplied with necessities that are essential for modern medical facilities, it is imperative to make a comprehensive First Aid Box consisting of basic drugs and accessories as part of the paraphernalia for your trip. Modern dentistry is unknown in the hills of Nepal, so it is advised to have a checkup before departure from home. Tooth fillings sometimes loosen in cold temperature and at high altitudes, so it is recommended having them checked

Altitude Sickness:

Altitude sickness often known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is particularly an important medical consideration while trekking in Nepal. Altitude sickness means the effect of altitude on those who ascend too rapidly to elevation above 3000 meters. The initial symptoms of AMS are as follows:

  • Nausea, Vomiting
  • Lose of appetite
  • Insomnia/Sleeplessness
  • Persistent Headache
  • Dizziness, Light headiness, Confusion
  • isorientation
  • Weakness, Fatigue, Lassitude, Heavy legs
  • Slight swelling of hand and face
  • Breathlessness and breathing irregularity
  • Reduced urine output

These symptoms are to be taken very seriously. In case of appearance of any of the above symptoms, immediately contact your travel guide.

In order for the Company to confirm and guarantee the Client’s travel arrangements the Client must provide all Client details with their final payment as per the dates specified.
