Bird Watching Tours

Bird Watching in Kathmandu:
Nepal is a paradise for bird's lovers and ornithologists. More than 800 birds species are known in Nepal, more than in Canada and the USA combined, or nearly 10% of the world's species. The most popular bird watching spots in Kathmandu are Phulchoki, Godavari, Nagarjun, Bagmati River, Taudaha and so on. The best time for bird watching is March and December.

Bird watching used to be a hobby pursued by people willing to put up with any discomfort in order to catch sight of an elusive species; but bird watching has changed. It has, quite literally, taken off. Specialist companies now provide luxury tours for enthusiasts who can now see birds that once they'd only dreamed of through rose-tinted binoculars. The Antarctic, the Galapagos, Russia, Siberia, Kenya, Cape Verde and Nepal; name your remote region and there are tour operators to oblige, enabling you to spot whichever feathered friend it happens to be, from flightless parrots to majestic condors.

Bagmati & Manohara
The wetlands in the valley, the banks of the Manohara river on the way to Bhaktapur, and the Bagmati river, which flows into the Valley from Shivapuri hill and out through Chobhar Gorge, are good places for watching waders and waterfowls. We can find Egrets, Herons, and Kingfishers, Ibis bill, Wood Sandpipers and plovers and so on there. Harbouring 40 species of birds mostly dependent on wetlands, Taudaha, a lake on the way to Dakshinkali, attracts flocks of migrant birds.

Phulchoki
The most popular bird watching spot is the Phulchoki hill, the highest peak on the Valley rim situated 20 km South East of Kathmandu, with some 265 species recorded to date.
We can see varieties of birds at that place. A Red- Headed Trogan (A rare bird) also sighted at Phulchowki at 2000. Phulchowki at 2760m lies South East of Kathamndu. At the foot of approach to this mountain lies the Botanical Gardens of Godavari. It is only the half hour drive from Kathamndu. Over 90 species of birds are recorded at that spot. Some of them are Spiny Babbler, Mountain Hawk, Woodpeckers, Black Throated Parrot bill etc.

Nagarjun
The other recommended site of bird watching is Nagarjun (2105M), which lies North West of Kathmandu. It is very near from the heart of Kathmandu(Thamel). Birds like Pheasants, Magpies, Sunbirds, and Ruby-throats can be found at that spot. Nagerjun Royal Forest on Jamacho hill is situated 5 km from Kathmandu on the way to Kakani from Balaju. It is a renowned sight for bird enthusiasts with blue magpies, kalij pheasants, Bonelli's eagles, and great Himalayan barbets amongst the many species found here.
