Sunkoshi River Rafting

Rafting in Sunkoshi RiverThe Sunkoshi ‘River of gold’ has been rated as one of the top ten rafting rivers for rafting adventure world! It is also in the list of ‘must do while in Nepal’. The river rises in Tibet, and flows eastwards in Nepal through the great valley between the Mahabharat Lekh (hills) and the Himalaya. It forms the watershed for most eastern Nepal. Gathering strength from tributaries draining the highest mountains in the world it emerges onto the northern plains of India where it joins the Ganges. This classic journey takes you 270 km through some of Nepal’s most remote areas giving you a unique wilderness experience. The first two days are relatively easy and allow time to train you as a team before the bigger rapids arrive. The rapids have acquired manes like Meat Grinder, High Anxiety, Jaws and Big Dipper, from previous experiences on expeditions. Say no more! The calmer stretches between rapids give you time to take in the phenomenal views, swim (voluntarily) in warm water and camp on the pristine white sandy beaches.

Day to Day Outline Itinerary

Day 01. You will be driven for 3 hours to Dolalghat by bus. Then goes a briefing on safety before rafting commences. After the lunch, pack everything and paddle to just before the first big rapid called ‘No Exit. Overnight stay will be on the sandy beach.
Day 02. Once all your gear is loaded on the boat you will be headed for a quick look at the rapid ‘No exit’. It’s class III type of rapid. Thereafter, on your part will be easy class II white water rapids for next few hours. Great opportunity to learn to Kayak! Enjoy your lunch on the riverbank. Later, in the afternoon you will be punching through a spine-tingling rapid called ‘meat grinder’. Camp will be set up on the confluence of the Tamakoshi River.
Day 03. Today’s part is easy-peasy white water rapids. A great opportunity to learn how to guide the raft and also how to paddle the kayak! You eyes will pay visit to some wonderful villages on the liquid highway. Punch few good rapids in the afternoon.
Day 04. This day for next 3 hours you will be punching three major rapids, all class III+. Lunch will be managed on the river beach. After the lunch, you paddle down to the village called Harkapur.
Day 05. Once you pack the boat and get your gear ready you walk down to the Harkapur rapid and have a good sightseeing there. Harkapur II rapid is one of the biggest rapids on the river. After clearing the remarkable rapid, you will paddle down to the confluence of the river called Dudh Koshi originated from the Highest Mountain in the world, the Mt. Everest. Afterwards, you will paddle down to the Raighat.
Day 06. It’s gonna be a big day for you! For the first couple of hours you will be paddling for some great class III white water rapids including rapids like Jaws and Deadman Eddie. Up next will be lunchtime for you. After the lunch, paddle down to Rasuwaghat. Buy few chickens and enjoy a barbeque night!
Day 07. You will be paddling through 10 km Jungle quarter. On this liquid way you will discover 12 rapids one leading into another. It’s a full power day today! It takes about 3 hours to clear this section. Now you will be stopping at the ‘waterfall beach’ for the lunch. Go and have a wash and get massaged! And this is also the place for tonight camping.
Day 08. Today you paddle for about 6 hours. Camp will be set up on the confluence of Arun. Paddle for some class III water.
Day 09. Paddling for 3 hours will make you reach at Barah Chhetra, a sacred place for Hindus. You will see so many pilgrims having holy bath in the river. You will catch sight of an interesting big rock made of copper. The villages in the vicinity of Barah Chhetra are really calm and relaxed. Now you paddle down to Chatara, which is your ending point. Then have lunch in Chatara, take a 2-hour drive to Biratnagar Airport and fly out from there to wherever you have made your next destination.
